PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform color display after recognizing existence of a color burst signal actually even when a weak electric field is input by enhancing the detection efficiency of a color burst signal when the weak electric field is input. SOLUTION: The television receiver includes an electric field strength decision section M1 for determining as a normal electric field when the signal strength of an input video signal exceeds a predetermined threshold and deciding as a weak electric field when the signal strength is below the predetermined threshold, and a burst gate means for starting a pulse from the second half portion of a horizontal synchronizing signal when an electric field strength decision means determines as a normal electric field to generate a first burst gate pulse having a pulse width including the standard position of a color burst signal and to generate a second burst gate pulse narrower than the first burst gate pulse while including the standard position when the electric field strength decision means determines as a weak electric field, and then deciding whether the color burst signal is detected within the range of the first burst gate pulse or the second burst gate pulse.
