PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily perform photometric processing in an imaging apparatus by completely following up a situation that a detection area is consecutively changed even when the detection area is consecutively changed such as when optical zooming. SOLUTION: Under the control of a control part 30, a detection circuit 13 sets the detection area comprising a plurality of division areas in an effective pixel area and calculates a detection value to be used for automatic control while setting the division area as a processing unit. For example, when a photographing state is changed such as when the optical zooming is used, the control part 30 controls the detection circuit 13 to insert a gap between division area columns provided in the detection area or eliminate the inserted gap so as to change the position of the division area, whereby the size of the detection area is rapidly and smoothly changed following up the change of the photographing state.
