A filter element, for immersion in the liquid to be filtered, comprises a cylindrical sleeve 1 made by bending self-supporting sheet, less than 2 mm thick, provided with evenly-distributed apertures 6 which taper from the inner wall to the outer wall where the apertures form slits 6a comprising less than 10%, preferably less than 5%, of the total external surface area of the wall, and where the apertures have a width (i.e. a dimension in the axial direction of the sleeve) of less than 250Á, preferably 80Á. At the inner wall, the apertures preferably constitute 20% to 60% of the total internal surface area. Steel sheet less than 1 mm thick can be used to make the element, the edges of the sheet being joined to form the sleeve by seam welding or by means of a folded seam. The base of the element consists of a perforated plate 2, preferably of the same material as the sleeve. The upper edge of the sleeve is welded to a connector piece 3. The outer wall of the element is polished to facilitate the sliding-off of the sludge cake. The element is cleaned by flushing it with liquid from inside by means of a nozzle assembly inserted in the element from the top. |
