PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk playback device reducing the power consumption thereof by increasing the ratio of reading pause time from an optical disk, and to provide a control method therefor. SOLUTION: When the remaining amount of a memory 14 becomes a predetermined value or less during playback at normal speed, a CPU 10 determines and sets, from stored information on the time to finally stop reading, a speed equal to or less than permissible highest speed of rotation and the nearly highest speed of rotation by referring to a time information versus speed table 11 and reads data from an optical disk 1 by a pickup 3 at the speed set by controlling a pitch shift means 6 to achieve the speed.
