PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetism detecting element suited to a high recording density especially by improving a substrate configuration between an insulating layer and a hard bias layer to stabilize playback characteristics. SOLUTION: The magnetism detecting element is provided with an element part T1 for exhibiting magneto-resistance effect, and both side parts 22 positioned in both sides of the element part T1 in a track width direction, and including an insulating layer 23, a Ta substrate layer 24, an alignment control layer 26, a hard bias layer 27, and a protective layer 28 stacked in this order from the bottom. The alignment control layer 26 is formed at Cr<SB>100-X</SB>Ti<SB>X</SB>(Ti composition ratio X is 0 to 13 at% ). Thus, a pop cone noise generation rate is reduced compared with conventional one to stabilize playback characteristics, and the magnetism detecting element for increasing an SN ratio and achieving a high recording density is obtained.
