PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a spatial and temporal controlling method for the gene expression.

SOLUTION: This invention provides a method for using local heat for controlling gene expression. The heat shock protein (hsp) gene is recombined with a selected therapeutic gene and expressed in the selected cells. Local controlled heating is used to activate the hsp promoter, for example by using focused ultrasound controlled by MRI.
