The invention relates to the use of imatinib mesylate for the treatment of metabolic disorders characterised by neurodegeneration, in particular a metabolic disorder characterised by an inability to metabolize lipids, such as in patients with Niemann-Pick C disease. More specifically, the invention relates to a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, comprising the delivery of a therapeutically effective quantity of a compound derived from benzamidine methanesulphonate or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The invention also relates to a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, comprising the delivery of a therapeutically effective quantity of a compound derived from imatinib mesylate or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
