The toxicity of smoke produced by tobacco products is reduced by adding either 0.1 to 1.0% by weight of ammonium sulphamate to cured tobacco or, preferably, where the tobacco is wrapped in paper as in a cigarette by adding to the paper 0.1 to 1.0% by weight of ammonium sulphamate based on the combined weight of the paper and tobacco. In the latter case the cigarettes are stored, after treatment of the paper thereof, until over 50% of the ammonium ion from the ammonium sulphamate has migrated to the tobacco. Preferably the cigarettes are stored for at least six weeks, whereby more than 70% of the ammonium ion migrates to the tobacco but at least 70% of the sulphamate ion remains in the paper.</p> |
