The method involves detecting the induced electrical measurements by the movement of a rotor (5) in a motor winding (4a). The relative rotor condition is detected by a sensor (7), which is coupled with the rotary movement of the rotor. The electric motor is excited based on the sensor signal and the detected, induced electrical measurements. The rotor is activated in a rotor status determining phase. An independent claim is also included for an electronically commutated electric motor comprising a sensor and control electronics.
