1,259,263. Gas blast circuit breakers. BROWN BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 16 Feb., 1970 [18 Feb., 1969], No. 7281/70. Heading H1N. A gas blast circuit-breaker comprises a highpressure gas chamber 6 having gas blast outlets 2d controlled by a slidable cylinder 7 with corresponding peripheral orifices 7a and operated by an insulated push-rod 8. The highpressure gas released enters an upper chamber 2b and hence causes a drive piston 11 to move downwards and so operate a mechanical linkage 12a, 12b, 12c. Movable nozzle contact 5 is released from fixed contact 4 and toggle linkage 13 assumes a second set position. The piston 11 moves within an apertured cylinder 10 movable by the piston within a compartment formed in the housing 2. Four axially spaced lateral ports 9 are provided in the wall of the compartment to correspond with cylinder ports 9<SP>1</SP> in one of the cylinder positions. Upward movement of the push-rod 8 from the open circuit-breaker position of Fig. 1b (not shown) provides a highpressure blast to the lower face of the piston 11 through the lowest port 9 causing the breaker contacts to close. The lower part of the housing 2 is maintained at a low pressure by a compressor, as with the nozzle contact open the high-pressure blast passes through the nozzle and tends to prevent a pressure differential occurring across the piston. A compressor, which may be both pressure and temperature controlled, may return gas from the lower pressure zone to the high pressure chamber. |
