PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid a situation that determination of existence of abnormality of a variable valve timing mechanism with relating to unable restart of oil shortage determination count process in the variable valve timing mechanism provided on an internal combustion engine together with a variable valve lift mechanism. SOLUTION: The variable valve lift mechanism 14 is forcibly driven to maximize operation angle and maximum lift of an intake valve 9 when stand-by of execution (restart) of oil shortage determination count process is started. An engine 1 is put under an operation condition where valve timing of the intake valve 9 is to be set at the most retarded angle when operation angle and the maximum lift of the intake valve is maximized. Consequently, a situation that a condition where stand-by of execution of oil shortage determination count process is not completed and that the oil shortage determination count process is not restarted can be avoided. Eventually, a situation that a determination of existence of abnormality of the variable valve timing mechanism 13 is not done in abnormality determination process can be avoided.
