The method involves determining a temperature of the fluid in a gearbox (14). The operation of a lock-up clutch of a torque converter (16) is determined. A torque of a motor is determined, and a traction power of a motor vehicle is computed. The torque converter lock-up clutch is operated and the gearbox is prevented from shifting up. The torque converter lock-up clutch is not operated when the temperature of the fluid exceeds a threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a system for cooling a fluid in a drive section.
