The belt drive has a belt (8), and pulleys (12,16,18,20) partly clasped by the belt, which is acted upon by a braking rotary moment or alternatively by a driving rotary moment on the belt. A belt tightening device passes on the belt tightening force depending on the driving or braking rotary moment to the belt. The belt tightening force increases with increasing value of rotary moment.
