摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gene involved in desaturation of a polyunsaturated fatty acid at carbon 5 (i.e. &Delta;5-desaturase) and at carbon 6 (i.e. &Delta;6-desaturase) and to provide a method for using the same. <P>SOLUTION: A nucleotide sequence encodes a polypeptide having desaturase activity. A purified polypeptide is encoded with the nucleotide sequence. The &Delta;5-desaturase may be used, e.g. in conversion from DGLA (dihomo-&gamma;-linolenic acid) into AA (arachidonic acid) and in the conversion from 20:4n-3 into EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). The &Delta;6-desaturase may be used, e.g. in the conversion from LA (linolenic acid) into GLA (&gamma;-linolenic acid). The AA and the polyunsaturated fatty acid which are produced may be added to a pharmaceutical composition, a nutritional composition, an animal feed and other products (e.g. a cosmetic). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
