PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly change over operation mode of an internal combustion engine while suppressing fluctuation of output torque when the operation mode is changed over between a compression ignition operation mode and a spark ignition operation mode. SOLUTION: A first intermediate mode put in a middle of transfer of the operation mode from the compression ignition operation mode to the spark ignition operation mode and a second intermediate mode put in a middle of transfer of the operation mode from the spark ignition operation mode to the compression ignition operation mode are provided. Air supply quantity and fuel supply quantity to the combustion chamber are controlled to make air fuel ratio of air fuel mixture gradually rich in the first intermediate mode and air supply quantity and fuel supply quantity are controlled to make air fuel ratio of air fuel mixture gradually lean in the second intermediate mode.
