PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of a display image or recording image by eliminating variation in focus of the display image nearby a focusing position when automatic focusing is carried out during image display or motion picture recording. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus includes an imaging device, a display unit which displays an image signal, a focus detection unit which detects the state of focusing of a subject image formed by an imaging optical system on the imaging device on the basis of the image signal generated by the imaging element at first time intervals, a selection unit which selects an image signal being put in focus more precisely on the basis of the focusing state of the image signal, generated by the imaging device at first time intervals, at each second time interval which is a period at which the display unit displays the image signal and which is longer than the first time intervals, and a display control unit which makes the display unit display the image signal selected by the selection unit at the second time intervals.
