1,207,680. Preparation of alcohols. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. 7 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966], No. 50541/67. Heading C2C. The preparation of alcohols by pastial oxidation of a saturated hydrocarbon in the liquid phase with molecular O 2 in the presence of a boron compound capable of forming an ester of the alcohol, whereby a reaction product containing borate ester or esters of the alcohol and hydroperoxides (i.e. any organic compound containing a peroxy oxygen atom) is obtained, from which the alcohol from said ester or esters is recovered, is improved by maintaining the reaction product at 125-200‹ C. for at least 5 mins., after the O 2 flow has ceased and before processing to recover the alcohol. The "heat soaking" step decomposes the hydroperoxides and increases the yield of alcohol. In examples, batch-wise and continuous processes wherein cyclohexane is oxidized to give cyclohexanol with by-product cyclohexanone, in the presence of metaboric acid are described. The oxidation reactions were carried out at 165‹ C. and 125 p.s.i.g., the "heat soaking" being at the same pressure and at 165‹ C. for 30 or 100 mins at 175‹ C. for 20 or 30 mins., at 125‹ C. for 120 mins., at 150 ‹ C. for 60 mins., and at 200 ‹C for 10 mins.
