A method for the authentication of a security-sensitive product comprises measuring an isotopic signature of an original material from which the product is manufactured and recording data relating to said isotopic signature; measuring a corresponding isotopic signature of the product and comparing respective signatures to determine the authenticity of the product against the original material. The product may comprise packaging material for a packaged product such as a pharmaceutical composition, the authenticity of the sealed packaging therefore determining the authenticity of the packaged contents or the product may comprise a pharmaceutical composition, an isotopic signature of a component thereof such as a filler, extender or excipient being measured and compared with that of the original component. The inherent isotopic signature of a security-sensitive product formed from or incorporating a polymeric material may be deliberately altered by blending two or more materials or by addition of other ingredients to provide a modified material having a known and unique isotopic signature. |
