The roll (1) has a rotatable roll shell (3) with a passage channel (5) whose cross-sectional surface (14) defines an active suction area at an outer periphery (7) of the roll shell and adjoins with areas that are free from passage channel (5) in area of axial extension at an inner periphery (8) of the roll shell. Passage channels (5') adjacent to a cover (4.1) and a flange (10) have a base passage channel (16) and an extension area (13) under the formation of the cross-sectional surface at the outer periphery, where the cross-sectional surface is increased in an axial direction.
