PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage system in which a storage device stores pair setting-related information as pair definition information to make a pair-setting operation simple, and also provide a data management method therefor. SOLUTION: The storage system is provided with one or more storage-controlling devices which store data transmitted from a host device, and a management terminal which manages the outputting and inputting of the data stored in the one or more storage-controlling devices. In this system, the one or more storage-controlling devices are provided with storage parts which form two or more logical volumes which are set as a pair on the storage areas of a plurality of hard disk drives, and store as the pair definition information, a state which does not execute the initial copying of data stored in copy-origin logical volumes, which are set as a pair, to copy destination logical volumes, on the basis of commands from a management terminal.
