<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize downsizing of a circuit board to constitute a device to turn on a discharge lamp, and realize low power consumption during standby. <P>SOLUTION: A DC voltage input from a power supply 11 is stepped down by a DC/DC converter 12 and supplied to the DC/AC inverter 15. At the inverter 15, an input DC electric power is converted into AC electric power, a high voltage is generated in a lamp start circuit 16, and supplied to the high pressure discharge lamp 17 to turn on the high pressure discharge lamp 17. A control circuit 18 controls so that output pulses d to drive the converter 12 and drive pulse signals g to be output to a full bridge driver 20 in order to make switch elements SW1, SW2, SW3, and SW4 of the inverter 15 alternately on-off are made to be output to a full bridge driver 20. The signals which let start a power supply to drive the control circuit 18 and lighting of the discharge lamp 17 are made to be used in combination, and the DC voltage is made to be supplied from outside via an interface circuit 19.
