PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent knocking while suppressing increase of an exhaust gas temperature and catalyst bed temperature when knocking occurs. SOLUTION: The control device of the internal combustion engine comprises a means for detecting the knocking, a means for retarding an ignition timing, and a means for leaning a fuel-air ratio by reducing a fuel injection amount. When the knocking is detected, a retarded amount of the ignition timing and a reduced amount of fuel are controlled on the basis of a load of the internal combustion engine. When the ignition timing is retarded, the knocking is prevented. When the air-fuel ratio is leaned, the exhaust gas temperature and catalyst bed temperature of the internal combustion engine can be decreased. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
