<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator capable of easily leading one failing car to the nearest floor when one of two cars fails, and reducing the cost, and a passenger rescuing method of the elevator. <P>SOLUTION: An upper part of a hoistway 1 is provided with a winding machine 7 for the upper car and a winding machine 12 for the lower car. A main rope 11 for the upper car is wound on a first driving sheave 9 of the winding machine 7. A main rope 16 for the lower car is wound on a second driving sheave 14 of the winding machine 12. The upper car 3 and a balance weight 5 for the upper car are suspended by the main rope 11 for the upper car. The lower car 4 and a balance weight 6 for the lower car are suspended by the main rope 16 for the lower car.
