The adjuster includes a rack (20) extending in the direction of adjustment. A pinion (40) meshes with the rack. The pawl (30) can be moved to a stop position in which it locks the pinion. Alternatively, it locks a further toothed wheel connected to the pinion. This prevents pinion rotation in at least one direction. The pawl can be moved to a release position, freeing the pinion. The further toothed wheel has finer teeth than the pinion. A lever (50) is used to change between stopped- and released positions.
