The present invention is a breakaway mounting bracket assembly 68 for a wiper system that displaces components of the wiper system (22, 222) below the impact line of a vehicle (10, 210) in the event of, for example, a vehicle-pedestrian impact. The assembly 68 includes a mounting bracket 70 and a grommet 74 removably attached to the mounting bracket 70. The assembly 68 also includes a ferrule 86 disposed within the grommet 74 that includes a column (94, fig 4) having an internal passage (96, fig 4) and a platform (102, fig 4) connected to the column (94, fig 4). The assembly 68 also includes an attachment member 84 to connect the mounting bracket 70 to the vehicle where the attachment member 84 includes a body 88 engaged to the internal passage (96, fig 4). The platform (102, fig 4) breaks away from the column (94, fig 4) in the event of a predetermined load acting on the pivot shaft assembly 42, which disconnects the grommet 74 from the ferrule 86 and thereby displaces the pivot shaft assembly 42 and a portion of a wiper arm 38 below the impact line of a vehicle. |
