When a hot-cathode fluorescent lamp is employed in an underneath backlight, a desirable relation between the number of hot-cathode fluorescent lamps as light sources and respective powers is provided. A liquid crystal panel (20) has a size of a screen (21) equal to diagonal L inch, and a ratio r obtained by dividing the longitudinal length of the screen (21) by the lateral length. An underneath backlight (10) installed on the back of the liquid crystal panel (20) comprises a hot-cathode fluorescent lamp (11) having one substantially linear light emitting section, and a housing (10) for housing the hot-cathode fluorescent lamps in the lateral direction. The number (N) and the power (W) of hot-cathode fluorescent lamps fall within predetermined ranges, respectively. ® KIPO & WIPO 2009 |
