A pharmaceutical composition for the skin preparation for external use for whitening, and a cosmetic composition are provided to reduce the stimulus to the skin and to improve safety. A pharmaceutical composition for the skin preparation for external use for whitening contains an extract of Carex humilis Leyss, or the alpha-viniferin separated from the extract of Carex humilis Leyss as an effective ingredient. Preferably the extract of Carex humilis Leyss is extracted from the stem, seeds, leaves or roots of Carex humilis Leyss.
