An apparatus and a method for estimating a universal channel in a wireless communication system are provided to adopt various or new channel estimation methods with a simple modification in an optical broadband wireless communication system. An apparatus for estimating a universal channel in a wireless communication system includes: a setting unit(208) which sets up variable values necessary for channel estimation; an allocation information storage(204) which stores pilot/data allocation information depending on the type of system and generates a control signal according to a selected pilot/data allocation information; a pilot arrangement unit(202) which arranges pilot symbols proper to calculation order under the control of the allocation information storage; and a channel calculation unit(210) which calculates the channel estimation values of data.
