The disc 1 has a label side 3 including a laser reactive material 3b for forming the label image, and a tracking format that can be tracked by a writing laser in a similar way to a data writing operation. An optical disk label writing method for writing a label on an optical disc uses a similar writing operation to that used to write data to the disc. A computer program is provided for converting a label image to a disk image file for writing to the label side. The label side can also have control data identifying the label side as a data writable side. The label side can include pixels P of different colours that are larger than the resolution of the data writing means so the intensity of each pixel is controllable according to a number of writing operation in that area. The pixels can have intermittent gaps to facilitate the operation of the drive. The label may be written using a standard optical disc drive. A laser writing print head (4) of a printer has a housing (6) and laser emitting array (5a-n) that emits simultaneously at least two beams of laser light onto a laser reactive media.
