The bristles of a brush 15 are loaded with a cosmetic, dentifrice or shoe polish, as the brush is withdrawn from container 1, 2, past a dispenser arranged in the path of the bristles. The dispenser may employ a resiliently urged piston 7, or a screwable piston, to push a block 10 of abradable material towards the brush head. In another form, a liquid or paste (24, Fig. 3, not shown) is applied to the bristles by means of a roller (22) or ball applicator.
