A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating cancer contains an extract of Tiarella polyphylla D. DON or a triterpenoid separated from Tiarella polyphylla D. DON as an effective ingredient. Preferably the extract is a crude extract or a polar solvent-soluble extract. Preferably the triterpenoid is the tiarellic acid represented by the formula I.
