An apparatus for treating a sleep-related breathing disorder in a patient by pneumatic splinting in the region of the upper respiratory tracts is disclosed. The apparatus includes a respiratory gas flow sensor providing a signal representative of respiratory gas flow; an electronic pressure regulating device; apparatus for delivering a supply of a respiratory gas at a pressure above ambient pressure level under the control of the electronic device and a signal processing device adapted to receive the signal, carry out a signal processing procedure and effect control of the treatment pressure. The signal processing procedure evaluates results of the signal representative of respiratory gas flow via differentiation to determine whether imminent breathing disorders or breathing disorders that already exist are caused by obstructive or central breathing disorders. The signal processing procedure further includes determining the inspiration time and expiration time for successive breaths and the ratios of the inspiration time and the expiration time for successive breaths.
