Disclosed is the use of a halogenated volatile anesthetic in the manufacture of a formulation for treating a patient having a tissue that is subject to an ischemic event, wherein the formulation is adapted for parenteral administration of a sub-anesthetic amount of the formulation effective to improve the tissue's resistance to or tolerance of the ischemic event.
