A coating composition for viscous - impingement air filters comprises (a) 100 parts by weight of a triorganic phosphate of the formula: (Alkyl-O-) n P(O)-(-O-Aryl) 3-n , wherein n is 0-1, the alkyl radical is of 1-10 carbon atoms and the aryl radical is derived from tar acids (as defined below); (b) 0À1 to 3 parts by weight of substantially pure pyrogenic silica having a particle size not greater than 0À025 microns and (c) 0À1 to 1À0 part by weight of a magnesium silicate which has at least 10% of the particles less than 1 micron in any dimension and a silica to magnesia (SiO 2 .MgO) ratio of 1À05 to 1 to 1À30 to 1. The term tar acid denotes those acids which can be extracted with dilute caustic soda from tars, such as coal tar, common wood tar, petroleum tar and lignite tar, or from distillates of such tars and includes phenol, ocresol, m-cresol, para-cresol and isomeric xylenols. The preferred phosphates are tricresyl phosphates prepared from POCl 3 and cresylic acids. The composition may be obtained by dispersing the gelling agents in the triorganic phosphate in a high-speed laboratory blender for a short period of time which may be as short as 1À5 minutes but any method of dispersing solids in liquids may be used. A small amount of a surface-active agent which may suitably be a cationic surfactant or a non-ionic surfactant and including glycols, polyglycols and glycerol may also be included and a small amount of water may also be present. An anionic surfactant may also be used provided a small amount of water is present. Specified phosphate esters are tricresyl phosphate, octyl diphenyl phosphate, cresyl diphenyl phosphate, methyl diphenyl phosphate and isodecyl diphenyl phosphate.
