Apparatus for forming layers of piece goods on a pallet comprises a vertically reciprocable platform for the pallet, and two conveyers for piece goods on opposite sides of the platform, each feeding a loading position where the piece goods are transferred to a displacing carriage and wherein the displacing carriages reciprocate along the same direction so that one is in the loading position while the other is over the pallet. A pallet roller track 1 feeds pallets to a central lifting platform where they are raised to the correct height. Crates are supplied along roller tracks 4 to a position between barriers 6 and 7, from where they are forced by pusher 5 on to the adjacent displacing carriage 9. The other displacing carriage 9<SP>1</SP> is arranged over the pallet. The displacing carriages are both moved to the right and the crates from 9<SP>1</SP> are loaded on to the pallet by a vertically reciprocable stripper, the pallet is lowered by the height of a crate, displacing carriage 9<SP>1</SP> reaches its loading position and is loaded by pusher 5<SP>1</SP>, and carriage 9 is placed over the pallet ready for unloading. Further crate feed conveyers 14, 14<SP>1</SP> with associated pushers 15, 15<SP>1</SP> and stops 17, 171 and 18, 18<SP>1</SP> may also be provided to speed loading.
