PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus for imaging a longitudinally photographed image and a laterally photographed image that can be displayed with good appearance on a wide screen of a display device, an imaging and display system and an imaging method. SOLUTION: A processing part 14 provided in the imaging apparatus 1 judges whether the image is in a laterally photographed state or a longitudinally photographed state on the basis of a posture signal given from a posture sensor 11 or a selection instruction received by a receiving part 12. The processing part 14 extracts rectangular image data having a ratio different from an aspect ratio of an imaging plane 131 from image data output by an imaging device 13 in accordance with the result of the judgment. The processing part 14 adds the judgment result to the extracted image data, gives the image data to a storage medium writing part 15 and writes the image data in a storage medium 2 inserted into the storage medium writing part 15.
