PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a precipitation hardening type stainless steel having strength and toughness after precipitation hardening, also having excellent machinability in a solid-soluted state, and suitable for a shaft for a vessel, a pump shaft, a twisting resistant bolt or the like. SOLUTION: The precipitation hardening type stainless steel having satisfactory toughness and machinability has a composition comprising, by mass, 0.001 to 0.030% C, 0.05 to 1.00% Si, 0.05 to 1.00% Mn, 0.01 to 0.05% P, 4.50 to 6.50% Ni, 14.00 to 17.00% Cr, 2.00 to 4.00% Cu, 0.15 to 0.50% Nb and 0.10 to 1.00% Mo, one or two kinds selected from 0.0005 to 0.0050% Ca and 0.0005 to 0.0050% B,≤0.05% N and≤0.010% O, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and also satisfies inequality (1):-210C+6Si-6Mn-20Ni+14Cr-7Cu+27.2Nb≤100.
