The device (1) has two transmitters (2a, 2b) arranged downstream to a scanner (7a) such that transmission light rays (3a, 3b) emitted from each transmitter are provided over a monitoring area. The transmitters are alternatively and individually activated, and a receiver (5) receives reception light rays (4) from the area. An evaluation unit (11) detects whether the transmission light rays of the transmitters are guided as reception light rays to the receiver within a measuring period. An object determined signal is generated depending on the result of the evaluation unit.
