An electric power steering device in which generation of strange sound can be prevented while shortening initial diagnosis time when an ignition switch is turned on again before elapsing a predetermined delay time after the ignition switch is turned off. The electric power steering device comprising a steering auxiliary control means performing drive control of the motor in a steering auxiliary mechanism, and a self diagnosis means performing initial diagnosis including diagnosis of a power interruption means of the steering auxiliary control means at least when the ignition switch is turned on and operating the steering auxiliary control means if the results of initial diagnosis causes no trouble in operation of the steering auxiliary control means (steps S21-S46) wherein the self diagnosis means is arranged to determine the items to be diagnosed in the next time initial diagnosis based on the diagnosis results after the steering auxiliary control means is operated before the ignition switch is turned off (step S45).
