PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steam generator which is used in a steam generating apparatus and in which the steam generation performance is not deteriorated for a long period of time. SOLUTION: The steam generator incorporates a porous metal body. The porous metal body consists of a porous metal whose surface of skeleton is covered with a silica coating layer composed of silica or a carbon-containing silica coating layer having the constituent composition containing 2.5-15 mass% carbon and silica as the remainder.
