A semiconductor memory system including a volatile memory and a nonvolatile memory is provided to reduce use of an unnecessary current and an unnecessary time by differently controlling according to movement conditions. In a memory cell array(210), a nonvolatile memory(120) includes a buffer memory(220) and an internal controller. A memory controller transmits a mode signal with the nonvolatile memory, and answers to a control signal corresponding to a mode applied to among a read mode and a write mode. An internal controller answers to the mode signal.
