An apparatus for briquetting loose, fibrous, or tangled material, particularly dried green crops such as grass or lucerne, comprises at least one compression cylinder with a side aperture for admitting the material from a precompression chamber into the cylinder in front of a piston operating therein, a pre-compression chamber having an inlet for the loose material and at least one wing mounted for rotation about an axis transverse to the axis of the cylinder, said wing being arranged to move through the chamber entirely outside the bore of the cylinder and with its extreme edge to sweep closely past that end edge of the side aperture of the cylinder which is downstream relative to the direction of the compression stroke of the piston. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, the material enters the precompression chamber 1 via entrance 2, and is swept to the side entrance 7 of the compression cylinder 4 by rotating wing 9. The extreme edge 10 of the wing is preferably resilient, and the motions of the wing 9 and piston 6 are preferably co-ordinated.
