PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new polycarbonate resin which is suitable for optical material uses, and has transparency, heat resistance, low photoelastic coefficient and high mechanical strength, and to provide an optical material using the polycarbonate resin. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to the polycarbonate resin comprising structural units represented by formula (1), wherein, R is one selected from a 1-9C alkyl group, a 6-12C aryl groups, a 2-5C alkenyl group, a 1-5C alkoxy group, a 7-17C aralkyl group, and a halogen; n is an integer of 0 to 4 which is the number of the R groups substituted on the benzene ring; Y is a 1-4C alkylene group; p is an integer of 0 to 4.
