An improved method for refilling a cryogenic hydrogen tank on a vehicle has some of the residual gas tapped off and cooled to a lower temperature via a heat exchanger (27) inside the supply tank (1). The cooled gas is collected in a buffer tank (28) before being compressed by a cryogenic pump (32) and fed back into the vehicle tank to cool it prior to refilling.
