<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, having superior initial capacity and charge and discharge cycle characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: The positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, having superior initial capacity and charge and discharge cycle characteristics, can be obtained as the positive electrode active material has the center section where lithium compound manganese oxide particles, which are a lithium compound manganate composition having the formation indicated by a general expression of LiMn<SB>2</SB>O<SB>4</SB>, exist at high density, and a surface layer where the lithium compound manganese oxide particles exist at a density lower than those of the center sections.
