PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer which automatically recognizes the type of a recording medium and automatically sets the number of print divisions of a print head, a print density, and a printing speed depending on the type of the recording medium and the temperature of the print head. SOLUTION: A print unit 5 has a medium attachment part 3 to which a long recording medium 2 is attached, a recording medium type input means 14 which inputs the type of the recording medium, a print head 8 which has a plurality of dot heat-generating elements and applies desired application energy to the recording medium, and a platen roller 9. The thermal printer has the print unit 5; a head temperature detection means which detects the temperature of the print head; a set value memory means in which set values of the number of print divisions, density values, and speed values are set and stored for the types of the recording medium and for the temperatures of the print head; and a control means 6 which extracts and sets the corresponding set values from the set value memory means based on the type of the recording medium input by the recording medium type input means and the temperature of the print head detected by the head temperature detection means.
