An assembly feeds sheets of paper through a printing press or associated paper handling machine. The assembly has a sheet gripper system (25, 26) holding the paper sheet (17) at the outer margin. The assembly has two guide plates (33, 36, 37) aligned with a parting line (38-40, 52-54) to guide the sheet along the desired track, and a pneumatic unit creating an air cushion between the sheet and guide plates. The pneumatic unit has an air supply (30, 47, 49) and air outlets (34) in the guide plates along the parting line.
