PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which a memory used to detect a stripe can be considerably reduced. SOLUTION: The image reader includes a read means 126 for reading image information of BW (black), R (red), G (green), and B (blue) of an original, and a first thin line detecting means 209 which detects a thin line continuous in a sub-scanning direction from the BW image data read by the read means. The image reader further includes a second thin line detecting means 210 for detecting a thin line continuous in the sub-scanning direction from the B image data read by the read means, and a third thin line detecting means 211 for detecting a thin line continuous in the sub-scanning direction from the G image data read by the read means. The image reader also includes a fourth thin line detecting means 212 for detecting a thin line continuous in the sub-scanning direction from the R image data read by the read means. The image reader has a stripe detecting means 213 for detecting a stripe continuous in the sub-scanning direction from the image data read by the read means by comparing detection results of identical parts of the first, second, third, and fourth thin line detecting means in a main scanning direction.
