PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus detection optical system having a wide focus detection area and hardly influenced by aberration, and an imaging apparatus using the same. SOLUTION: The focus detection optical system includes a condenser lens 4, a pupil division diaphragm aperture 5, a re-imaging lens group 6 and a photodetector train 7, and has at least n (n≥2) focus detection areas adjacent to each other or crossing with each other on a scheduled imaging surface. The re-imaging lens group is equipped with (n+1) re-imaging lenses 6; and (n-1)th and (n)th re-imaging lenses 6<SB>n-1</SB>and 6<SB>n</SB>correspond to the (n-1)th focus detection area, and are also a pair of re-imaging lenses 6<SB>n-1</SB>and 6<SB>n</SB>adjacent to each other; and (n)th and (n+1)th re-imaging lenses 6<SB>n</SB>and 6<SB>n+1</SB>correspond to the (n)th focus detection area, and are also a pair of re-imaging lenses 6<SB>n</SB>and 6<SB>n+1</SB>adjacent to each other.
