A multiwell plate device 10, 100 is provided having a frame 16, 106, a substantially flat substrate 12, 102 and a multiwell structure 14, 104 supported by the substrate 12, 102. The multiwell structure 14, 104 includes multiple bottomless wells 36, 132 formed therein. The substrate 12, 102 is supported by the frame 16, 106 and may be processed by an automated arrayer or instrument that is used to print or spot arrays in a pattern on a reaction surface 26, 120 of the substrate 12, 102. Thereafter, the multiwell structure 14, 104 may be engaged with the substrate 12, 102 and the multiwell structure 14, 104 and substrate 12, 102 may be engaged with the frame 16, 106 in an upright orientation. For scanning or other analysis, the multiwell structure 14, 104 and substrate 12, 102 may be disengaged from the frame 16, 106, inverted 180°, and then reengaged with the frame 16, 106 in the inverted orientation.
